Kash Patel became the ninth Director of the FBI on February 20, 2025. He was narrowly confirmed by the Senate over Democratic objections about his qualifications and his stated intention to reshape the bureau around the priorities of President Trump, who appointed him.
Here is what has happened since.
The Iran Firing
In February 2026, Patel fired at least a dozen agents and staff members from CI-12, a counterintelligence unit specifically tasked with monitoring threats from Iran and its proxies. Three days after the firings, the United States launched airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Senator Richard Blumenthal questioned Patel directly in a September Senate hearing about the decision to eliminate Iran specialists days before a war with Iran began. Patel said the agents "failed to meet the standards of the FBI." He did not explain how their Iran expertise factored into that determination.
The Purge of Trump-Adjacent Investigations
Patel has fired agents and supervisors connected to the investigation into Trump's handling of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, the January 6 investigation, and agents photographed kneeling during Black Lives Matter protests in Washington following George Floyd's death.
Three fired senior officials sued Patel in September 2026, alleging he carried out "a campaign of retribution" under political pressure from the White House. The FBI Agents Association described his conduct as "a campaign of erratic and arbitrary retribution."
A New York Times investigation published this fall, based on interviews with 45 current and former FBI officials, described an atmosphere of fear and internal tension at the bureau. "We're losing the ability for agents to conduct their work without fear or favor," said one former agent.
The Standards
Patel testified before Congress defending changes to FBI hiring standards involving conduct screening. He also drew criticism for using an FBI jet to attend the Winter Olympics, where he was filmed partying with the U.S. hockey team and chugging beer in the locker room.
The Result
The FBI is currently investigating a fatal shooting at a Virginia university as a terrorism act and an active shooter situation at a Michigan synagogue. It is doing so with a significantly reduced counterterrorism and counterintelligence workforce, following months of firings driven by political considerations rather than performance.
Today's reporting notes the FBI cuts are leaving national security priorities understaffed heading into the midterms.
Before becoming FBI Director, Patel wrote a series of children's books including "The Plot Against the King," a thinly veiled political allegory framing Trump's enemies as villains in a fairy tale. He is now the director of the nation's premier law enforcement agency.
