On Saturday night at a campaign rally in Georgia, President Donald Trump promised every adult American citizen a $5,000 check — but only if Republicans win both the House and the Senate on November 3.
"If Republicans win the House of Representatives and the Senate, I'm going to give all adult citizens in the United States, man and wife, separately — in other words, double $5,000," Trump said. "The only caveat that I ask for on the Trump dividend is that you have to spend the money in the United States."
He has made this promise before. Multiple times. The checks never came.
The promise count
This is not the first time Trump has promised Americans a direct payment. It is not the second. It is at least the fourth.
In February 2025 Trump and Elon Musk endorsed a "DOGE dividend" of $5,000 per household to be funded by government savings identified by the Department of Government Efficiency. Musk claimed DOGE would find trillions in savings. The savings did not materialize at the promised scale. The checks were never sent.
In November 2025 Trump posted on Truth Social claiming his tariffs were bringing in trillions of dollars and promised "a dividend of at least $2,000 a person" to everyone not in a high income bracket. The checks were never sent.
In January 2026 Trump promised $2,000 tariff dividend checks would be issued by mid-2026. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the proposal "needs legislation" and it was not clear Congress had the appetite to pass it. Mid-2026 came and went. The checks were never sent.
Now, nine days before the midterm elections, it is $5,000. Conditioned on a Republican sweep of both chambers. Called the Trump dividend.
What an economist and YouGov poll found
Only 21% of registered voters believe Trump would definitely or probably issue the $5,000 dividend if Republicans win. More than half — 57% — said he probably or definitely would not follow through. Even among Republicans, less than half — 45% — think he will actually do it.
The people being promised the money don't believe they'll get it. They've heard it before.
What the math actually says
Sending $5,000 to every adult American citizen would cost approximately $1.3 trillion. That is more than the entire annual revenue from Trump's tariffs. It would require congressional approval — the president cannot unilaterally issue direct payments to Americans. It would add to a national debt that already exceeds $40 trillion. Several Republican senators have already publicly opposed the idea including former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson who posted that if Republicans win the GOP leadership "should vote down the Trump Dividend and instead focus on reducing our $40 trillion national debt."
The promise costs nothing to make. The check would cost $1.3 trillion to send. There is no legislation drafted. There is no funding mechanism identified. There is no congressional majority committed to passing it.
There is nine days until the election.
What this is
Promising voters a direct payment contingent on them voting for your party nine days before an election is the oldest political maneuver in the book. It is a bribe dressed as a dividend. The only difference between this and buying votes is that the payment comes after the election instead of before it — and even then, based on four prior promises that never materialized, probably not at all.
The president is not promising Americans $5,000. He is promising Americans that if they vote Republican they will get $5,000. Then after the election — if Republicans win — Congress will need to pass legislation, find $1.3 trillion in funding, and follow through on a promise that has already been broken four times in different forms.
The 79% of voters who don't believe it will happen are probably right. They've seen this movie before.
The alternative
A JJ Johnson presidency does not promise Americans checks that require trillion dollar legislation and congressional approval to deliver. It promises to stop taking their money in the first place.
Eliminate the federal income tax — every American keeps 100% of every paycheck immediately. No legislation needed after the fact. No check in the mail that may or may not arrive. No condition on how you vote.
The money stays in your pocket before it ever leaves.
That is not a campaign promise. That is a platform. There is a difference.
