On the same Friday that the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the U.S. economy added just 29,000 jobs in September, President Trump posted a meme on Truth Social comparing Barack Obama to Richard Nixon, with the caption: "One of these men is the most corrupt president in the history of the United States. The other is Richard Nixon."
Trump has long targeted Obama. The meme is consistent with his approach of keeping attention on political opponents rather than economic data.
The September jobs number — 29,000 added, unemployment at 4.2 percent — is the weakest monthly report in years and lands four weeks before midterm elections. Trump has already argued that any recession following a Democratic midterm win would be the Democrats' fault. Republicans have controlled Washington for 21 months.
On the same day the jobs report dropped, gas prices sat at a national average of $4.36. The Medicare Part B premium increase of nearly 10 percent this year continues to hit seniors. The five direct payment promises Trump has made since taking office — totaling over $12,500 per American adult — remain undelivered.
Voters will decide in four weeks whether the meme or the jobs number is the more relevant data point.
