Twelve days before midterm elections, President Donald Trump stood at a rally in Sioux City, Iowa and declared that Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota must immediately resign from Congress — and that her seat had already been conceded to Republicans.
No vote has been cast. No investigation has concluded. No court has ruled. No charges have been filed.
Trump was referencing a federal court filing submitted by the office of US Attorney Jeanine Pirro — a Trump ally — that identified Omar as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar." The filing concerned efforts to keep materials sealed in relation to a federal search warrant executed on Omar's Washington DC home earlier this month.
Trump told the Iowa crowd: "It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar's name is not Ilhan Omar, the one she used to get elected and sworn into Congress. She used a fake name to be sworn in. I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress."
He then declared: "Please inform our great Speaker of the House that the Democrat Party has just conceded her seat."
The crowd chanted "Lock her up."
What the evidence actually shows
Omar's name in a federal court filing appears as "Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar." The "a/k/a" — also known as — designation indicates an alias, not a legal name substitution. The filing does not state that Omar used a fraudulent name. It identifies her under multiple names as federal filings routinely do.
Omar's office responded immediately: "This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name."
The allegation that Omar married her brother — which Trump repeated at the rally — has circulated for years and has never been substantiated. When asked about it directly Omar said "not to my knowledge." Trump cited that answer as evidence of guilt.
Trump's claim that Omar has "openly admitted to fraud" is not supported by any public statement Omar has made.
What actually happened here
A US Attorney appointed by Trump filed a court document that used the phrase "a/k/a" next to Omar's name. Fox News reported it as a bombshell. Trump cited the Fox News report at a midterm rally twelve days before the election. He then declared her seat flipped and asked the Speaker of the House to act on a concession nobody made.
This is the full chain of evidence behind a sitting president calling for a sitting congresswoman to resign and declaring her election already over.
The timing
The search warrant on Omar's home was executed at the start of October. The court filing surfaced this week. Trump brought it to a midterm rally on October 22. The midterms are November 4.
Omar is running for reelection in Minnesota's 5th District. Her Republican opponent now has the sitting president declaring victory on his behalf based on a court filing that does not allege what Trump says it alleges.
What this is
This is a president using the machinery of federal law enforcement — a search warrant, a court filing, a US Attorney he appointed — as political content for a midterm rally. The investigation may be legitimate. The allegation may prove true. Neither of those things has been established.
What has been established is that twelve days before an election a president declared a congressional seat flipped at a rally based on a Fox News report citing unnamed sources about a court filing his own Justice Department produced.
In a constitutional republic that would be called election interference.
