President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday afternoon that he was banning CNN, MSNOW — formerly known as MSNBC — and Politico from the White House effective immediately.
Effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW and Politico from the White House as a result of their constant reporting FAKE NEWS! Trump wrote. Media Outlets shouldn't be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they're covering the President of the United States.
Trump threatened that other outlets would follow.
When asked in the Oval Office what specific stories prompted the decision Trump said there were no particular stories. It's really just cumulative stories over the last few years, you get sick of it, he said. They purposely write negative news, and they do that because they want to try and diminish the Republicans and a Republican administration.
What Actually Happened After the Announcement
Despite the announcement CNN reporters remained at the White House and continued covering the administration on Friday afternoon. It was not immediately clear whether the White House would enforce the prohibition or how it intended to do so.
Former WHCA president and CBS News correspondent Weijia Jiang said publicly that the First Amendment protects the freedom of the press from the government.
