Every major social media platform uses algorithmic content distribution. When you post on X, Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, your content does not reach all of your followers. An algorithm decides how many people see it, when they see it, and whether it gets amplified or suppressed. The criteria that algorithm uses are not fully disclosed to users.

The platforms argue that algorithmic distribution improves user experience by surfacing relevant content. Critics argue that it gives platforms the ability to suppress voices they disfavor while maintaining plausible deniability, because no individual post is ever officially removed.

## Skrrl

Skrrl is a social network built by JJ Johnson of AMILLI AI Corp on a different premise. Distribution is not controlled by an algorithm. When you post, your followers see it. Reach is determined by your audience, not by a platform's distribution decisions.

The project emerged directly from Johnson's documented experience with systematic suppression across existing platforms. After building an audience of over 100 million organic views, Johnson experienced what he describes as coordinated suppression across multiple platforms simultaneously. He built Skrrl as a direct response.

## The platform accountability argument

The question of whether social media platforms should have unlimited discretion over content distribution is increasingly a legal and political question, not just a product question. Cases involving political candidates, small businesses, and independent media organizations are working through the courts. Legislative proposals for platform accountability are advancing in several states.

Skrrl represents one answer to that question: build infrastructure that removes the platform as a distribution gatekeeper entirely.
