When Robinhood was named sole initial trustee for Trump Accounts on July 4, 2026, it reported $25 million in revenue from the program in roughly three weeks of operation. Over 7 million accounts were registered in that period.
That's the starting point. Here's where it goes.
What Trump Accounts Are
Trump Accounts are federally funded brokerage accounts seeded with $1,000 for every child born between 2025 and 2028. Approximately 14.4 million children are eligible based on projected birth rates over those four years. Parents can contribute up to $5,000 annually. The accounts convert to traditional IRAs at age 18.
Robinhood is the broker and sole initial trustee, working with BNY as the Treasury's financial agent. The program is structured on a cost-plus basis, meaning Robinhood is reimbursed for costs plus a margin. The company invested $100 million to build the infrastructure and expects revenues to exceed that investment.
Melania Trump this week announced a foster care extension of the program covering approximately 400,000 additional children in the foster system.
The Government Seed Scenario
If only the government's $1,000 seed is counted across all 14.8 million eligible children, total government outlay is approximately $14.8 billion. At 7 percent annual growth over 18 years, that pool of assets grows to roughly $50 billion by the time the first cohort turns 18.
On Robinhood's cost-plus structure, their cumulative revenue from the government-seed-only scenario over 18 years is estimated in the range of $5 to $8 billion.
The Maximum Contribution Scenario
If parents contribute the maximum $5,000 annually across all 14.8 million accounts over 18 years, total contributions reach approximately $1.3 trillion before any market growth. At 7 percent annual growth, total assets under management across all accounts at year 18 could approach $2.5 to $3 trillion.
At even a fraction of a percent in annual fees on that asset base, Robinhood's cumulative revenue from this program over 18 years would be in the range of $15 to $25 billion — making it potentially the most lucrative government partnership in retail financial history.
The Realistic Middle
Most families won't contribute the maximum. The real number likely lands between the two scenarios. But even at modest average contributions of $500 per year per account, total assets at year 18 approach $500 billion, and Robinhood's cumulative take over the program's life would run into the tens of billions.
What It Means
Robinhood had $2.3 billion in total revenue in 2024. The Trump Accounts program, on its own, has the potential to generate more than that annually within a decade, entirely from a government contract awarded without competitive bidding to a single broker.
The children the program is designed to help won't see a dollar of it until 2043. Robinhood starts collecting now.
