The board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is voting today on whether to shutter the venue. A 57-page filing says the center faces certain fiscal collapse within weeks — unable to meet payroll or routine maintenance contracts.
The board, largely appointed by President Trump, says adding Trump name to the building facade is the only way to save it.
A federal judge has already ruled that is illegal.
How It Got Here
The Kennedy Center was created by Congress in 1958 as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. A federal court ruled this year that the Kennedy Center organic statute makes clear the center is to be named for President Kennedy and cannot bear any other formal name based on the board unilateral decision. The center newly appointed programming head resigned after less than a week.
Artists canceled performances in protest and revenue cratered. The annual Kennedy Center Honors attracted its smallest audience in history in 2025.
What the Board Is Saying Now
The board position is that without Trump name on the building donors will flee, financial contributions will dry up, and rehabilitation will stop.
Attorneys Norm Eisen and Nathaniel Zelinsky responded in a statement: This constant effort to add Donald Trump name to the Kennedy Center facade is the definition of insanity. This is now the third attempt to deface this sacred memorial and turn it into a vanity project for one man ego. Worse still, now Trump is taking the Center hostage and threatening to in effect kill it unless he gets his way.
Trump niece, psychologist Mary L. Trump, said publicly that the move is part of his effort to punish the United States when he cannot get his way.
The Legal Status
A court blocked the renaming. The board has continued to pursue it anyway. The DOJ argued the board and President Trump should be allowed to move ahead with a two-year renovation that would shut down most of the complex.
The center own court filings threatened demolition — describing the building as embarrassing to the nation capital and a sick and poorly run facility — if renovation plans do not move forward.
What Is at Stake
The Kennedy Center hosts over 2,200 performances and events per year with over two million visitors annually. It is a federally funded institution and a living memorial to a slain president established by an act of Congress.
Whether it closes, is renamed, or is demolished is ultimately a question of whether a president can use financial pressure to override a court order and a congressional mandate.
