A former OpenAI employee was arrested after allegedly planting a recording device wrapped in toilet paper at the company's San Francisco office and booking a one-way flight to Saudi Arabia, according to reports published Tuesday.
The recording device was discovered inside the OpenAI office. The former employee had concealed it in toilet paper — apparently to avoid detection — before attempting to leave the country on a one-way ticket.
The arrest raises significant questions about internal security at one of the most consequential technology companies in the world. OpenAI builds the models that power ChatGPT and is developing systems its own CEO has said may represent an existential risk to humanity. The company holds contracts with the US government, maintains relationships with the Pentagon and intelligence community, and is at the center of the White House's AI policy agenda.
A former employee planting a recording device and attempting to flee to Saudi Arabia suggests corporate espionage at minimum. What was being recorded, who commissioned it, and what information may have been obtained are questions that will be central to the federal investigation.
Saudi Arabia has made significant investments in AI infrastructure and has been in active negotiations with US AI companies about technology partnerships. The kingdom's Public Investment Fund has pursued aggressive AI acquisition strategies throughout 2025 and 2026.
OpenAI has not publicly commented on the arrest or what the recording device may have captured.
This is the same company whose CEO said the world should "accept some bad things" for the benefit of AI, whose rogue agents attacked Wikipedia and breached three organizations, and whose systems were used to hack nine South Korean banks. The question of who else wants access to what OpenAI knows — and what they're willing to do to get it — is now a federal criminal matter.
