European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed today that Canada become the European Union first associate member — a new category that does not currently exist in EU treaties. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sat in the front row of the European Parliament in Strasbourg as she made the announcement.
The proposal is a direct consequence of the Trump administration trade war with Canada.
What Von der Leyen Proposed
Von der Leyen proposed the expanded partnership would cover advanced manufacturing, technology, defense production, the Arctic, energy, critical minerals, batteries, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cybersecurity and economic security.
