The Elon Musk origin story is one of the most carefully maintained myths in American business. Immigrant from South Africa. $100,000 in student debt. Built PayPal, Tesla, and SpaceX from scratch through sheer genius and work ethic. Self-made. The ultimate example of American meritocracy.
The story has a problem. His father tells a different one. And the documented record supports his father.
The emerald mine Elon says didn't exist
In December 2019 Elon Musk posted on X: "He didn't own an emerald mine & I worked my way through college, ending up ~$100k in student debt."
The problem is that Elon himself previously confirmed the mine existed. In a 2014 interview he mentioned that his father had a share in an emerald mine in Zambia. He described believing it for a while before saying nobody had ever seen it and there were no records of its existence.
His father Errol tells a different story entirely. Errol confirmed to multiple outlets that he owned a stake in an emerald mine in Zambia and described it in detail — including a four-day visit to the mine that teenage Elon attended with him. Errol confirmed he sent money from emerald sales to Elon and his brother Kimbal for living expenses during their college years. He described the mine as collapsing in 1989.
In one interview Errol said: "We had so much money we couldn't even close our safe." He described teenage Elon walking around with emeralds in his pockets.
Elon denied the mine. Then confirmed it. Then denied it again.
His father has never wavered.
What the mine means for the origin story
Elon Musk built PayPal — then called Zip2 and X.com — with venture capital funding. He built Tesla by investing $70 million of his own money from the PayPal acquisition. He built SpaceX with $100 million of his own money from the same acquisition.
The question of where the money came from before PayPal matters. If Errol's account is accurate — and he has been consistent while Elon has contradicted himself — then the student debt narrative obscures a childhood of material comfort funded in part by an emerald operation in apartheid-era Zambia.
This is not a small detail. It is the difference between a man who built everything from nothing and a man who built everything from a foundation of family wealth that he has spent years denying.
What happened in Malibu
Elon Musk purchased a $2 million house in Malibu for his father Errol and Errol's stepdaughter Jana Bezuidenhout — a woman Errol had raised from childhood, having been married to her mother for 18 years.
While living in the Malibu house Errol's behavior toward Bezuidenhout resulted in police being called and a complaint being filed with child protective services in Los Angeles.
What happened next: Elon moved his father out of the $2 million house he had just bought him. He moved him to a boat in Los Angeles. Then he sent him back to South Africa.
Errol claimed he left on his own. He was soon financially dependent on Elon and his brother Kimbal for support.
What happened after South Africa
Years after being sent back to South Africa Errol Musk confirmed he had fathered two children with Jana Bezuidenhout — the stepdaughter he had raised since she was a child, who had lived with him while growing up, whose mother he had been married to for 18 years.
Bezuidenhout was 29 when she became pregnant with Errol's first child. Errol was in his 70s.
Elon reportedly went berserk when he found out. His siblings were deeply disturbed. Errol's other daughters were shocked because "to them, it was their sister."
Errol defended the relationship. He told one outlet: "The only thing we are on Earth for is to reproduce. If I could have another child I would."
A New York Times investigation later reported that Errol Musk faced accusations of sexually abusing five of his children and stepchildren.
In Walter Isaacson's 2023 authorized biography of Elon Musk — a biography Elon participated in and approved — the strongest language used about Errol's behavior toward his stepdaughter is that he had been "uncomfortably attentive" to her.
Elon Musk has never publicly condemned his father's actions. He has evaded, deflected, and used the language of discomfort rather than condemnation.
The man this is about
Elon Musk currently holds a formal role in the United States federal government. He owns X — the platform that has suppressed declared presidential candidates' campaign accounts. He holds billions in government defense contracts through SpaceX. He recently invested $1 billion in Skydance giving him a financial stake in CNN, CBS, and HBO. He is a co-defendant in active federal civil litigation.
The self-made myth surrounding this man is not a minor detail of his biography. It is the foundation of his public persona — the immigrant who came to America with nothing and built everything through genius and merit.
His father says he sent emerald money to fund his college years. His father had children with his own stepdaughter. Police were called at a house Elon bought them. Elon moved his father to a boat and sent him out of the country.
None of that appears in the self-made story.
The garage myth. The dorm room myth. The emerald mine that didn't exist until it did until it didn't again.
The founding stories of the men who control American infrastructure are not the stories they tell.
