Politics & Power

China is honest about its system. The Communist Party controls the infrastructure. The party controls the media. The party controls who can run for office, who gets heard, and who gets silenced. It does not call this freedom. It calls it stability. It does not pretend the playing field is level. It does not tell its citizens that anyone can succeed if they work hard enough and have a good enough idea.
America tells its citizens exactly that. And that is what makes the American version of the same system more dangerous than the Chinese one.
What we have documented in this series
Over the past weeks NewsOnScale has published a series of articles examining the founding stories of the men who control American infrastructure. What the reporting found was consistent across every subject.
The internet was built by DARPA with taxpayer money. The search engine that indexes it was partly funded by the CIA and NSA through a program called MDDS. The social network used by three billion people was conceived at a prep school that charged $60,000 a year in tuition, built at Harvard, and spread through elite university networks before it opened to everyone else. The operating system that runs 70% of the world's personal computers was purchased for $50,000 from a man nobody has heard of because the founder's mother sat on the same nonprofit board as IBM's chairman. The surveillance technology company that holds a $10 billion Army contract was funded by the CIA and had the CIA as its only customer for three years. The platform that became the primary infrastructure of American political communication was opened to FBI content censorship under its founder and is now owned by a man who simultaneously holds billions in government defense contracts and a formal government role.
None of these founding stories are told this way. They are told as stories of individual genius. Hard work. The American dream. The garage. The dorm room. The Harvard dropout.
The garage is real. The dorm room is real. The dropout is real.
What is also real is the DARPA funding. The CIA seed money. The IBM chairman's connection. The FBI pipeline. The government contracts that sustained these companies through their early years and continue to sustain them today.
The infrastructure of American life — communication, commerce, information, entertainment, finance — was built with public money, commercialized by people with the right connections, and is now controlled by a small group of interconnected individuals who share boards, share investors, share government contracts, and share a common interest in maintaining the conditions that keep them at the top.
The Chinese model
China's social credit system monitors citizens through a network of AI cameras. WeChat — owned by Tencent, which owns stakes in Discord, Riot Games, Epic Games, Snapchat, and Reddit — gives the Chinese government access to the communications of anyone who uses it. The National Intelligence Law requires every Chinese company to provide user data to the government on demand. Alibaba controls commerce. Baidu controls information. The party controls all of them.
You do not need a soldier on every corner when you control the infrastructure every person depends on to live, work, communicate, and participate in society.
The American model
Elon Musk owns X — the platform that has become the primary infrastructure of American political communication. He holds billions in SpaceX government defense contracts. He has a formal role in the federal government. He recently invested $1 billion in Skydance giving him a financial stake in CNN, CBS, and HBO.
Mark Zuckerberg owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp — the social communication infrastructure for three billion people. A New Mexico jury just ordered his company to pay $25 billion for 43 million violations of user privacy.
Jeff Bezos owns Amazon and AWS — the commerce and cloud infrastructure that runs the US government and the CIA. He owns the Washington Post — the newspaper that covers the government whose cloud his company operates.
Larry Ellison owns Oracle — the data infrastructure for US government and federal intelligence agencies. He owns 98% of a Hawaiian island where 3,000 Americans live in total economic dependence on one man. He has publicly called for AI cameras to record every American citizen at all times.
Peter Thiel built Palantir with CIA seed money, had the CIA as his only customer for three years, and now holds a $10 billion Army contract. His surveillance technology has been used to conduct predictive policing on American citizens.
Jensen Huang controls 80% of the chips that power every AI system on earth. He sells those chips to US military institutions and to Chinese companies with military connections simultaneously.
Jack Dorsey built a pipeline for the FBI to direct content censorship at Twitter while simultaneously using Twitter's money to build its replacement without telling anyone.
These men know each other. They invest in each other. They sit on each other's boards. They share government contracts. They share a common interest in maintaining the permission structure that allowed their companies to reach the scale they have.
You do not need a Communist Party when you have Sequoia Capital, In-Q-Tel, DARPA, the FBI's general counsel on your payroll, and the cloud contract for the CIA.
The difference between the two systems
In China the control is acknowledged. The party does not claim to be operating a free market. It does not tell its citizens that the playing field is level. It does not publish founding myths about garage startups and Harvard dropouts. It is openly authoritarian and makes no apology for it.
In America the control is hidden. The platforms claim to be neutral infrastructure. The banks claim to be making independent business decisions. The media claims to be free. The founding myths claim that genius and hard work are all it takes. The government claims to protect competition and free markets through antitrust law that it has not meaningfully enforced against these companies in decades.
The Chinese model is honest about what it is. The American model is not. And a citizen who knows they are controlled can make decisions accordingly. A citizen who believes they are free while being controlled cannot.
That is not a minor distinction. It is the most important one.
What happens to people who build outside the system
In China if you build a platform that competes with WeChat without party approval it gets shut down. If you try to run for office outside the party's permission structure you are removed.
In America if you build competing payment infrastructure without the right VC connections your accounts get suppressed. If you build a competing social platform without institutional backing your tokens get flagged as spam. If you run for president without the approval of the donor class that funds both parties your campaign bank account gets denied by 21 federally regulated financial institutions. If you file a federal lawsuit against the companies doing this to you they collect your biometric data during active litigation and label your accounts inauthentic four hours after verifying your humanity.
You are not arrested. You are not disappeared. You are financially isolated, communicatively suppressed, and biometrically identified — and told the whole time that you live in the freest country on earth.
What the founders designed and what replaced it
The founders of this republic were not naive about power. They had just fought a revolution against a system in which one class — the crown and its appointees — controlled the land, the commerce, the military, and the information. They designed a constitution specifically to prevent that concentration from forming again.
Separation of powers. Checks and balances. Free press. Antitrust law. Equal protection. A republic of citizen legislators who would serve temporarily and return to their ordinary lives rather than a permanent professional class that converts public power into private wealth across decades of uninterrupted tenure.
What exists today is the system they designed the Constitution to prevent. It was not built overnight. It was built gradually — acquisition by acquisition, government contract by government contract, revolving door appointment by revolving door appointment — until the map of American infrastructure looks the way it looks today.
One percent of the population controlling the infrastructure that the other ninety-nine percent depends on to live, work, communicate, and participate in democracy.
China figured this out decades ago. America built the same system and called it freedom.
That is what makes it more dangerous. Not the control. The lie.
